Gingival melanin pigmentation occurs in all races of man. Although clinical melanin pigmentation does not present a medical problem, demand for cosmetic therapy is commonly made people with moderate gingival melanin pigmentation.
Gingival hyperpigmentation may cause esthetic problems, especially in patients with a gummy smile. Melanin pigmentation is related to etiologic factor such as hormone, systemic factor, drug, smoking, and gingival inflammation.
Depigmentation procedure can be performed by gingival epithelium removing procedure, gingivectomy, free gingival graft, laser therapy, dry ice, vitamine C and phenol-alcohol method.
We could obtain favorable esthetic results by procedures such as diamonds bur and phenol-alcohol method and kirkland knife.
